Adopted in 2016, the EU directive on making websites and mobile apps accessible to individuals with disabilities impacts all public sector bodies in all EU member states. The goal of the directive is to build a social and inclusive EU, where all Europeans can fully participate in the digital economy and society.

Implementation Timeline:

  • All EU member states must have incorporated the directive’s text into their national legislation by September 23, 2018
  • All website created after that date must be accessible by September 23, 2019
  • Existing websites must be accessible by September 23, 2020
  • All mobile applications must be accessible by June 23, 2021

The European Commission will publish the technical specifications necessary to meet the directive’s requirements by December 23, 2018. It’s a safe assumption, though, that meeting the requirement of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 AA level would meet the directive’s requirements, since most countries have used that as the basis for their accessibility requirements.
